Vector rotate magnets, superconducting magnets for precise field vector control

Example of a VR 7/1/1 vector rotate magnet system

Vector rotate magnets

Unlike standard magnets where the direction of the field vector is fixed (usually horizontal or vertical), Vector Rotate (VR) magnets provide the user with the ability to "steer" the field vector to the desired orientation.

This is necessary, for example, if the exprimental arrangement prevents the sample from being moved at all. Vector rotate magnets allow precise alignment between the field vector and some critical direction in a sample, such as crystal axisor thin film surface. Even when mechanical alignment is possible it rarely achieves better than 0.1%; vector rotate magnets achieve angle resolution several orders of magnitude smaller.

Features and benefits:

  • Magnetic field up to 9T in compact geometries.
  • Two axis coil configurations with accurate field vector alignment and full two-dimensional vector rotation capability.
  • Three axis coil configurations with accurate field vector alignment and full three-dimensional vector rotation capability.
  • A range of central access geometries, compatible with many sample environment inserts providing temperatures from 500K down to 5mK, for applications flexibility.
  • A range of magnetic field homogeneity specifications to suit the measurement technique.
  • Flexibility of magnet operation in swept field or persistent modes.
  • Integration with proven electronic control with Labview driver options, for ease of use.

Vector rotate magnets fall conveniently into three categories:

  • The first is where the angle of the field vector needs to be varied by a small amount, typically a few degrees in one plane.
  • The next group of vector rotate magnets is constructed from 2 split pairs to allow access to the field centre from two orthogonal directions. Full rotation of the field vector is possible in one plane.
  • The most demanding option provides a specific field magnitude in any direction. This requires a solenoid to be combined with two split pairs.
  • Two-axis vector rotate magnet
