Helium System Cryostats

Helium System Cryostats

OIS provides two types of cryostat enviroments to suit their experimental inserts and magnets.

SMD – Standard Magnet Dewar
Dewars that are helium vapour shielded and available in three standard heights:
SMD10/15VS – 1440mm tall
SMD10/15VSEX - 1640mm tall
SMD12/15VSEX - 1840mm tall (Kelvinox400HA)

Understanding the Code:
Example: SMD10/15VSEX = SMD
SMD – Type of dewar
10 – 10” diameter neck
15 – 15” diameter belly
VS – Vapour Shielded
EX – Extended

Helium can diameter is manufactured to suit the chosen magnet or in the case no magnet is required the helium can diameter will be the same diameter as the dewars neck.

If a magnet is required then a magnet support system (MSSSMD10(12)LPF) is required as this is fitted with the current leads, magnet protection circuit and lambda point refrigerator
Usable liquid helium volume in the dewar without magnet or insert fitted ranges from 45 litres to 65 litres.
Helium consumption ranges from 550cc/hr to 850cc/hr dependant on which insert is fitted (Insert with zero flow through insert)

LLD1 – Low Loss Dewar
Dewars that are liquid Nitrogen shielded and available in one height - 1640mm
These have a neck diameter of 5” and are fitted with fixed current leads.
Usable liquid helium volume without magnet or insert fitted is approximatly 55 litres.
Helium consumption ranges from 300cc/hr to 350cc/hr dependant on which insert is fitted (Insert with zero flow through insert).
Liquid Nitrogen consumption 470cc/hr.
Dewar is also fitted with a manually operated lambda point refrigerator.

Unlike the SMD type dewar the LLD1 dewar does not require a magnet support as the magnet is installed via an Indium seal flange located at the bottom of the dewar.
